Amsterdam, NY (June 6, 2025) — A New York State trooper was seriously injured Friday afternoon after a semi-truck tractor struck the officer’s patrol car during a traffic stop on the westbound New York State Thruway near Exit 26, according to State Police.
Incident Details: The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. when a semi-truck without a trailer rear-ended the stopped patrol car, which then hit the Honda Odyssey the trooper had pulled over. The impact threw the trooper over a guiderail and down an embankment. Authorities confirmed that the trooper was transported to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries and later released Friday night.
The driver and passenger of the Honda Odyssey were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam with minor injuries. The westbound Thruway at Exit 26 was temporarily closed while police investigated the scene and set up a traffic diversion.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: State Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash. Authorities will likely examine whether the truck driver violated traffic laws, or if distracted driving, speed, or mechanical failure may have played a role in the collision.
Depending on the findings, those injured in the crash may have grounds for personal injury claims. Compensation could help cover medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages related to the collision.
My thoughts are with the injured trooper and the other individuals involved.
