Loveland, CO (March 8, 2025) – A tragic crash on Interstate 25 in Loveland on March 8, 2025, claimed the life of 50-year-old Adrian Michael McGuinn, a resident of Berthoud, according to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.
Accident Details: According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), troopers had already responded to an earlier crash just north of Crossroads Boulevard when, at 8:04 a.m., they discovered a secondary crash involving a Toyota Rav4 and a semi-truck just south of Crossroads Boulevard in the northbound lanes.
Authorities say McGuinn, who was in the Toyota Rav4, was traveling behind a Volvo truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer. The semi slowed down, and the Toyota rear-ended the trailer and became wedged underneath it. McGuinn died at the scene due to multiple blunt force injuries, according to the coroner’s report. The semi-truck driver was uninjured. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to CSP Trooper Sherri Mendez.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Investigators will examine whether the semi-truck’s actions contributed to the crash in any way, particularly whether it slowed down too abruptly or traveled at a safe following distance relative to the traffic ahead. Large commercial trucks require significantly more distance to slow down safely than passenger vehicles.
The investigation will focus on why the truck slowed down and whether its braking was appropriate for the traffic conditions at the time. If the truck driver had to slow down due to traffic conditions, investigators will determine whether they did so gradually and with adequate warning to trailing vehicles. Similarly, they will assess whether the truck maintained a proper following distance to allow for safe and controlled braking.
Authorities will review the black box data from the semi-truck to analyze its speed, brake application, and sudden deceleration in the moments before the crash. Witness statements may also provide critical insight into whether the truck’s actions were unexpected or if external factors required it to slow down.
Depending on the results of the investigation, McGuinn’s family may be able to file a wrongful death claim and recover compensation for their loss.
I extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of Adrian McGuinn.
