Saul Goldberg Passes Away from Hit-and-Run Injuries in San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo County, CA (July 23, 2024) – On July 23, 2024, a tragic hit-and-run accident on South Higuera Street led to the death of 87-year-old Saul Goldberg from Avila Beach.

Accident Details: The incident happened around noon as cyclists traveled southbound near the cemetery. The sedan first sideswiped one bike rider before hitting the second. Both cyclists were thrown from their bikes. They were wearing helmets. Goldberg was taken to the hospital in critical condition but did not survive. The other cyclist sustained injuries described as minor to moderate.

The driver of the white sedan fled the scene immediately after the crash. The San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) is actively investigating the incident and has asked for public assistance in identifying the driver. Witnesses or anyone in the area at the time are encouraged to contact SLOPD. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be shared as they become available.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find the primary challenge is locating the driver. The SLOPD’s ongoing search for the vehicle and its driver is crucial for ensuring justice. If the driver involved in the hit-and-run is identified, the family of Saul Goldberg may pursue a wrongful death claim. In a wrongful death claim, the family must prove that the driver’s actions were negligent or reckless, directly leading to Goldberg’s death. They can seek compensation for various damages, including funeral and burial expenses and loss of companionship.

The injured cyclist may be able to file a personal injury claim and recover expenses such as medical expenses and lost wages.

My sincerest condolences go to Saul Goldberg’s family and friends during this difficult time. I wish the other cyclist a fast recovery.
