Groveland, CA (May 29, 2024) – A severe head-on crash on Highway 120 near Yosemite National Park claimed the life of a Texas woman and left others with significant injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Incident Details: The accident occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, west of Smith Station Road, approximately 40 miles east of Knights Ferry. A 2024 Kia Forte, driven by a couple from Texas, veered across the double yellow line while heading westbound on Highway 120, colliding head-on with a 2013 Kia Soul operated by a man from Truckee. The passenger of the Kia Forte, 73-year-old Sara Brent of Humble, Texas, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers and other passengers involved sustained major injuries and were transported to Doctors Medical Center and Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
Investigation and Legal Implications: According to CHP, all occupants of the vehicles were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, and there is no initial indication that drugs or alcohol played a role. The exact cause of why the Kia Forte crossed into oncoming traffic is still under investigation, with CHP officials working to determine the factors that led to this tragic incident. While accidents like this are sometimes caused by distractions, inattention, or recklessness, it is also possible that a vehicle defect may be responsible. This is why it will be essential for investigators to examine every possible cause. However, if it’s found that a defect did cause the crash, the family of the deceased victim could seek a wrongful death claim. Additionally, injured victims could file a personal injury claim. Ultimately, it depends on the circumstances leading up to the accident. Regardless, it is likely that the passengers could seek justice based on the available information.
My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Sara Brent. I also wish a swift and thorough recovery for the injured victims.
