San Mateo County, California (September 8, 2025) — A California Highway Patrol officer sustained major but non-life-threatening injuries Monday after being struck by a Tesla while on a motorcycle in San Mateo County.
Incident Details: The crash occurred around 2:15 p.m. on Interstate 280, just south of Alpine Road. According to CHP, the officer was responding to a report of an electric leaf blower blocking lanes south of Page Mill Road. While conducting a traffic break with emergency lights activated, a 2026 Tesla Model Y collided with the officer’s motorcycle, ejecting the officer. The injured officer was transported to a hospital and is expected to recover. The Tesla driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Investigators are examining whether the Tesla’s driver assistance system was active at the time of the collision. Crashes involving autonomous or semi-autonomous features raise complex questions about liability, potentially implicating both the driver and the manufacturer. The officer may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits, as well as potential civil claims against the driver and Tesla if negligence or system failure is found.
I wish the CHP officer a full and speedy recovery following this San Mateo County crash.
