Hesperia, CA (May 23, 2025) – A freight company employee is facing a DUI and vehicular manslaughter investigation after allegedly running over and killing a coworker alongside Interstate 15 in Hesperia Friday evening, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Accident Details: The fatal incident occurred around 6:22 p.m. on the southbound side of I-15, near Caliente Road just south of Oak Hill Road. Authorities say 31-year-old Rudy Sanchezbat of Chino had been driving a white box truck for Champions Express Inc., a freight company based in Fontana.
Sanchezbat and two coworkers had pulled off the freeway to take a break. As they prepared to re-enter the highway, Sanchezbat began driving and unintentionally struck one of the men, not realizing he was near the vehicle. The victim died at the scene. His name has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Legal Considerations: Sanchezbat remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities confirmed that alcohol was a factor, and a report for vehicular manslaughter and DUI is being submitted to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for potential charges.
In California, a DUI resulting in death can carry felony charges, including prison time, fines, and permanent license suspension. The victim’s family may also have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim against both the driver and potentially the freight company, depending on the circumstances surrounding supervision, safety protocols, and alcohol use.
Ongoing Investigation: The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate. No formal charges have been filed as of Saturday evening, and additional details are expected as the case is reviewed by prosecutors.
I extend my condolences to the victim’s family and coworkers during this tragic and avoidable loss.
