Riverside, CA (February 20, 2025) – Stephanie Varieur, 61, of Riverside, was tragically killed in a motorcycle collision involving a big rig shortly before 8 p.m.
Accident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Varieur was riding a three-wheel Can-Am Spyder motorcycle on the southbound 215 Freeway near Van Buren Boulevard. When she attempted to turn right, she collided with the semi-truck trailer. Her motorcycle was caught by the truck’s wheels, causing it to flip over and throwing Varieur into the roadway. After the crash, the big rig driver pulled over, dragging the motorcycle with the trailer. Varieur was pronounced dead at the scene by Riverside Fire Department paramedics.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Authorities will conduct a detailed investigation to determine the collision’s cause and establish liability.
- Video Surveillance and Accident Site Analysis: Investigators will review surveillance footage from traffic cameras and nearby businesses to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash. This footage will help determine the position and speed of both vehicles and corroborate eyewitness statements. The accident site will also be analyzed.
- Driver Behavior: Driver behavior is a critical factor in establishing liability. Investigators will examine whether either driver was distracted, speeding, or driving recklessly. They will also look into driver fatigue, inattentiveness, and decision-making to determine if either driver failed to react appropriately or misjudged the distance and speed of the other vehicle.
- Right of Way: Determining who had the right of way is a crucial aspect of this investigation. California law requires drivers to yield the right of way when changing lanes or making turns. Investigators will assess who had the right of way and whether either driver misunderstood the events.
If a victim is killed in a crash due to another’s negligence, the victim’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim.
I extend my sincerest condolences to Stephanie Varieur’s family and friends during this difficult time.
