Ricky Dale Shaw Killed in Fatal Truck Crash at SH 302 and FM 181 in Ector County

ECTOR COUNTY, TX (July 9, 2025) – A fatal crash at the intersection of State Highway 302 and Farm-to-Market Road 181 claimed the life of 56-year-old Ricky Dale Shaw on Tuesday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Accident Details: The collision happened when a 2020 Kenworth semi-truck pulling a trailer, driven by 51-year-old Jose Reyes Pena of Odessa, was traveling southbound on FM 181. Authorities say Pena failed to yield the right-of-way at the intersection of SH 302.

Ricky Dale Shaw, also of Odessa, was driving a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado westbound on SH 302 when his vehicle struck the semi-truck. Shaw was pronounced dead at the scene. Pena was transported to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa with minor injuries.

Both drivers were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

This was the second fatal collision at this intersection in three days, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in the area.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Texas Department of Public Safety is continuing to investigate the crash. In similar cases, authorities review whether commercial drivers followed roadway rules, including yielding at intersections and ensuring safe crossing. Trucking companies and drivers are held to specific safety standards under Texas and federal law, especially regarding right-of-way violations.

Families affected by fatal truck crashes may have legal options to pursue claims for wrongful death, medical expenses, and other damages when negligence is involved.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Ricky Dale Shaw during this difficult time.
