Redding DUI Hit-and-Run Claims the Life of Joshua Robert Berry

Redding, CA (December 9, 2024) – On December 9, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., 33-year-old Joshua Robert Berry of Redding was killed in a hit-and-run.

Accident Details: Berry was walking on the shoulder of Canby Road near the Pineland Drive intersection when he was struck by a vehicle. A witness reported that the driver initially stopped but then fled the scene. Emergency responders transported Berry to Mercy Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries on the morning of December 10.

Investigation: The Redding Police Department arrested the suspected driver, 25-year-old Tabitha Wilkins of Redding. Authorities allege Wilkins was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. She is charged with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit-and-run causing death and causing bodily injury while under the influence. Wilkins is being held in the Shasta County Jail with bail set at $250,000.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Driving under the influence is a serious breach of a motorist’s legal duty to operate their vehicle safely. Wilkins’ decision to flee the scene adds another layer of culpability. California law requires drivers involved in an accident to stop and provide aid. Leaving the scene of a crash is a criminal offense that exacerbates the severity of the case.

Berry’s family may be able to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against Wilkins. Such a claim would seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional suffering caused by Berry’s untimely death.

I extend our deepest sympathies to Joshua Berry’s family and loved ones during this challenging and heartbreaking time.
