Salinas, CA (May 10, 2024) — A devastating crash on Highway 68 resulted in the deaths of two local residents on Friday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The collision occurred at the intersection with Spreckels Boulevard around 4:44 p.m.
Incident Overview: A grey Mazda CX9, driven by 64-year-old Pascasio Contreras-Dominguez, was traveling east on Highway 68 when it veered onto the grass median for unknown reasons and struck a sign. The vehicle then crossed into the westbound lanes, colliding head-on with a white Honda CRV operated by Bridget Peterson, 52, in the number two lane. Both drivers, who were alone in their vehicles, are from Salinas. Contreras-Dominguez was pronounced dead at the scene, while Peterson was transported to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: CHP is currently investigating the cause of the crash, including whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors. The findings will play a critical role in determining the events leading up to the accident. Regardless of the cause, it is likely that the family of Bridget Peterson could pursue a wrongful death claim for their loss. However, who they would file a claim with would also depend on the cause of the accident. For example, if it’s found that a defect with Contreras-Dominguez’s vehicle caused the accident, there is a chance that both families could pursue a claim against the manufacturer. Otherwise, if it simply was driver negligence, the claim would likely go through an auto insurer. This is one of the many reasons why it’s important for the investigation to look for these possible causes.
I offer my deepest condolences to the families and friends of Bridget Peterson and Pascasio Contreras-Dominguez during this incredibly difficult time. I hope that they receive the support they need following this accident and the loss of their respective loved ones.
