South San Gabriel, CA (January 11, 2025) – An 84-year-old pedestrian, Wei Bao, was fatally struck by a white Honda Accord on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
Accident Details: The incident occurred at approximately 6:05 p.m. at the intersection of San Gabriel Boulevard and Delta Street in South San Gabriel. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but sadly, Bao was pronounced dead at the scene. The California Highway Patrol has not clarified whether the driver of the Honda Accord stopped at the scene.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident raise several critical legal questions. Determining whether the driver remained at the scene or committed a hit-and-run is crucial. Under California law, drivers involved in collisions are legally required to stop, render aid, and report the incident to authorities. Additionally, investigators must assess whether speeding, distracted driving, or failure to yield contributed to the collision. Pedestrian safety laws in California prioritize the right-of-way for those crossing streets in marked or unmarked crosswalks, and any violation could establish driver negligence.
Depending on the investigation’s findings, the family of Bao may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Damages in such claims can include funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and emotional distress.
I extend my deepest condolences to those mourning Wei Bao’s passing, and I hope they find strength during this heartbreaking time.
