Pomona, CA (September 6, 2024) – On the night of Friday, September 6, 2024, 66-year-old Debra Celia Jaure was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident while crossing Mission Boulevard at Myrtle Avenue in Pomona.
Accident Details: According to witness reports, the driver allegedly raced another vehicle when they hit Jaure and fled the scene. The impact threw Jaure nearly 40 feet. Later, the driver responsible for the crash turned themselves into Pomona police, though authorities have not confirmed whether street racing played a role. The driver has since been released as the investigation into this fatal crash continues.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination.
Street Racing: Witness accounts suggest that street racing may have been involved, which, if proven, could indicate negligence on the driver’s part. In California, street racing is illegal, and drivers engaging in such behavior could face criminal charges and civil liability.
Hit-and-Run: A hit-and-run accident can indicate negligence, as drivers have a legal duty to remain at the scene of an accident, especially when a pedestrian has been injured. Fleeing the scene not only violates California law but can also strengthen a case for negligence if the driver’s actions contributed to the fatality.
Wrongful Death: If the investigation confirms that negligent actions, such as street racing or a hit-and-run, directly caused Jaure’s death, her family may be able to file a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death lawsuit allows family members to seek compensation for the financial and emotional losses caused by the death of a loved one, including funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and other damages.
My deepest sympathies go out to Debra Celia Jaure’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Her family has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for her final expenses. Please contribute if you can.
