Pedestrian Kathryn Hong Killed in Monterey After Being Struck by Pickup Truck

Monterey, CA (September 20, 2024) – On Friday, September 20, 2024, a tragic accident occurred near the Monterey Conference Center at the intersection of Calle Principal and Del Monte Avenue.

Accident Details: At approximately 8:03 p.m., 65-year-old Kathryn Hong of Minneapolis was struck by a pickup truck while she was in the crosswalk. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Hong later succumbed to her injuries.

Investigation: The vehicle’s driver, a 23-year-old from Salinas, immediately stopped and remained at the scene. Monterey police have confirmed that impairment was not a factor in the crash. The case was forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney’s office for further review and possible charges.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Kathryn Hong was in the crosswalk at the time of the collision, which raises questions about whether the driver exercised due caution as required by law. Under California law, drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians in marked crosswalks. The outcome of the investigation, especially witness statements, traffic light patterns, and potential surveillance footage, could clarify whether the driver’s actions meet the legal standard for negligence.

Hong’s family may still have the option to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit if it’s determined that they failed to exercise reasonable care while driving. Such a suit could provide compensation for funeral costs, loss of financial support, and the immense emotional toll this incident has undoubtedly taken on her loved ones.

I extend my deepest condolences to Kathryn Hong’s family and friends as they cope with this devastating loss.
