Reeves County, TX (April 3, 2025) — A construction worker was fatally struck by a semi-truck on Interstate 20 west of mile marker 28 Thursday afternoon. The truck driver fled the scene but was stopped by a construction supervisor.
Incident Details: At approximately 2:30 p.m., a semi-truck traveling westbound on I-20 entered an active construction zone where traffic had significantly slowed. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the truck driver swerved to avoid the slow-moving vehicles and struck a construction worker within the work zone.
The victim, identified as 24-year-old Purdon of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene. After the collision, the driver reentered the highway and continued traveling westbound. A construction supervisor eventually managed to stop the truck.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities have identified the driver as Jose Alfonso Melendez, 77, of El Paso, Texas. He has been formally charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid and Collision Involving Death. The crash remains under active investigation.
While Melendez is facing criminal charges, Mr. Purdon’s family may also pursue a wrongful death lawsuit to seek civil remedies, including compensation for funeral costs, loss of income, and emotional suffering.
My thoughts are with the loved ones and colleagues of Mr. Purdon at this time.
