Patricia Ware Killed in Red-Light Hit-and-Run Collision in Gardena

Gardena, CA (February 2, 2025) – Authorities have identified Patricia Ware, 76, as the victim of a fatal two-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Gardena.

Accident Details and Ongoing Investigation: The collision occurred around 7:40 a.m. near Rowley Park. According to the Gardena Police Department, Marian James, 29, of Los Angeles, was driving southbound on Van Ness Avenue when she allegedly ran a red light at the intersection with 135th Street. James’s vehicle collided with Ware’s eastbound vehicle, resulting in Ware’s death at the scene.

James fled the scene but was later arrested outside her Los Angeles residence by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department. She was booked at the Gardena Police Department. Investigators are asking anyone with additional information to contact them.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Investigators will rely on eyewitness testimony, traffic camera footage, and forensic evidence to confirm the sequence of events.   Under California law, drivers involved in accidents must stop, render aid, and report an accident. James’s failure to stop breached this duty.  Running a red light also violates traffic laws and demonstrates a breach of the duty to drive safely. These breaches can expose James to criminal and civil proceedings.

California law allows families to recover damages when the death is caused by another party’s negligence or intentional misconduct. Depending on the investigation’s facts, Ware’s family may pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against James.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Patricia Ware during this heartbreaking time.
