Waverly, NE (May 5, 2025) – A collision on Interstate 80 Monday afternoon sent one person to the hospital after a semi-truck attempted an illegal U-turn and was struck by an oncoming car, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 12:50 p.m. on the eastbound side of I-80 near North 162nd Street. According to authorities, the semi-truck driver had been parked on the outside shoulder of the highway before attempting to make a U-turn to head westbound. In doing so, the semi pulled directly into the path of an eastbound Ford Fusion.
The Ford crashed into the side of the semi’s trailer. The driver of the Ford was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi was cited at the scene for making an illegal U-turn and reckless driving.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: In this case, the Nebraska State Patrol determined that the semi-truck driver’s maneuver violated traffic laws and cited them for the illegal U-turn and reckless driving. These citations may serve as evidence in a civil claim. Investigators will continue reviewing scene evidence, witness statements, and possibly dashcam footage to complete their assessment of fault.
