Houston, TX (May 12, 2025) — A collision involving a box truck and two other vehicles resulted in the death of a passenger and significant traffic delays Monday afternoon on the East Freeway near Beltway 8, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Incident Details: The crash occurred when a box truck traveling westbound on the freeway began experiencing engine issues and slowed to about 15 mph in a travel lane, creating a sudden hazard for other drivers. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said two vehicles attempted to avoid the slow-moving truck. While one managed to swerve safely, a Chevy Silverado following behind was unable to avoid a collision and struck the rear of the box truck.
The front-seat passenger of the Silverado died at the scene, and the driver was taken to the hospital with injuries. No additional injuries were reported. Officials confirmed there were no signs of intoxication from either driver.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities will review key factors, including the box truck’s mechanical failure, the driver’s response to the emergency, and whether hazard signals or other preventive measures were taken before the crash.
Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the family of the deceased passenger may be entitled to file a wrongful death claim, seeking compensation for funeral expenses, emotional distress, and loss of companionship. The injured driver may also pursue personal injury damages for medical treatment and related losses.
