Bicyclist Seriously Injured in Pacific Beach Crash

San Diego, California (September 22, 2025) — A 57-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured Sunday night after being struck and run over by a vehicle in Pacific Beach, according to the San Diego Police Department. The collision remains under investigation by the department’s Traffic Division.

Incident Details: The crash occurred around 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Oliver Avenue and Ingraham Street. Police say the bicyclist was traveling eastbound on Oliver Avenue when a northbound Mazda CX-5 driver failed to stop at a stop sign and broadsided the cyclist. The impact threw the bicyclist to the ground in front of the SUV. Authorities reported that the Mazda driver exited the vehicle without placing it in park, which caused the SUV to continue moving. The rolling vehicle ran over the victim before striking a curb and a nearby metal gate.

Injuries Reported: The bicyclist sustained multiple fractured ribs and other serious injuries. Emergency responders transported him to a hospital for treatment. His name has not yet been released. Police have not provided updates on his condition beyond confirming the injuries are significant.

Driver and Investigation: San Diego police stated that impairment was not suspected in the collision. However, investigators continue to review all circumstances, including driver attentiveness and speed. The fact that the vehicle rolled after the driver stepped out is also under review as investigators determine whether mechanical failure or driver error contributed to the secondary impact. Officers from the SDPD Traffic Division are handling the case.

Community Impact: Crashes between vehicles and bicyclists are a persistent safety issue in urban neighborhoods like Pacific Beach, where residential streets intersect with busy commuter routes. Police urged drivers to come to complete stops at posted signs and remain vigilant for bicyclists and pedestrians at all hours. They also encouraged community members to report unsafe driving behaviors that increase the risk of collisions in densely traveled areas.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact the San Diego Police Department or call San Diego Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

I extend my thoughts to the injured bicyclist and hope for his full recovery.
