One Person Killed, Two Injured in Four-Vehicle Crash on I-96 in Michigan

Orange Township, Michigan (August 27, 2025) — A four-vehicle collision on Interstate 96 near Sunfield Highway left one person dead and two others seriously injured on Tuesday, according to local authorities.

Incident Details: The crash occurred on the westbound side of I-96 in an area where traffic was merging into a single lane. Preliminary findings indicate that a semi-tractor-trailer struck an SUV that was slowing in the merge zone, forcing the SUV off the roadway. The truck’s momentum then carried it into a second SUV, which became pinned between two additional semi-trucks. The chain reaction caused catastrophic damage, and one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals were transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing with serious injuries. Officials have not yet publicly identified the victims or specified which vehicles they were in. The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the investigation remains active.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Multi-vehicle crashes involving large trucks often present difficult questions of fault and liability. In this case, investigators will need to determine whether the tractor-trailer driver failed to reduce speed in a construction or merge area, and whether distractions, fatigue, or following too closely played a role. When semi-trucks are involved in collisions, attorneys typically look beyond the driver’s immediate actions to the broader practices of the trucking company. Key questions may include: Was the driver operating under tight delivery schedules that encouraged unsafe behavior? Was the truck properly inspected and maintained? Did the company comply with federal hours-of-service regulations designed to prevent driver fatigue?

From a civil standpoint, the family of the deceased victim may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such a claim can seek compensation for funeral costs, lost income, and the emotional toll of losing a loved one. The two seriously injured individuals may also pursue claims for medical expenses, ongoing rehabilitation, and the loss of ability to work. Injuries from high-impact crashes often involve spinal damage, traumatic brain injuries, or internal trauma, conditions that may carry lifelong consequences even when patients initially survive.

When multiple semi-trucks and passenger vehicles are involved, it is not unusual for liability to be shared among several parties. One truck driver’s actions may have initiated the crash, but if another driver was speeding, distracted, or failed to react appropriately, they too may bear responsibility. Additionally, cargo loaders, maintenance contractors, or insurers may become implicated depending on the facts uncovered. Truck accident claims and broader personal injury litigation may be required to fully account for the harm caused.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the person who lost their life in this devastating crash and our thoughts are with the injured victims as they begin their recovery.
