Carbon County, WY (March 15, 2025) – A collision on Interstate 80 between two Freightliners left one driver injured and their co-driver dead.
Accident Details: The deadly crash occurred near milepost 215 in Carbon County. A white Freightliner driven by 46-year-old Borys Bakhtiarov was traveling on Interstate 80 in Carbon County near milepost 215 at Rawlins. He crossed from the westbound lane through a guardrail and cable barrier and then crashed into an eastbound Freightliner. The crash seriously injured the driver of the second truck and killed the co-driver, who was resting in the sleeper cab.
Authorities arrested Bakhtiarov at the scene, and he agreed to provide a blood sample, though the affidavit does not state the results of the test. Bakhtiarov was charged with homicide by vehicle along with an additional charge for failure to stay in his lane. He pleaded not guilty in Rawlins Circuit Court on Monday.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Drivers must remain in their designated lanes and exercise extreme caution. Investigators will determine why Bakhtiarov’s truck veered into oncoming traffic—whether due to driver fatigue, distraction, or another factor.
Truck drivers often log long hours, and fatigue is a common cause of trucking accidents. The Wyoming Highway Patrol and crash investigators will likely review Bakhtiarov’s driving logs to determine if he complied with federal Hours of Service (HOS) regulations. They will also look at surveillance or dashcam footage and review vehicle inspection records to determine if the truck had any brake failures, steering malfunctions, or maintenance issues that could have contributed to the crash.
The family of the deceased co-driver may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim if negligence is determined to be the cause of the accident. The injured driver may be able to pursue a personal injury claim.
I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased truck co-driver. I wish the injured driver a fast recovery.
