Chicago, IL (April 5, 2025) – A crash late Friday night on the Dan Ryan Expressway claimed the life of one person and left two others injured after a semi-truck collided with a stalled car.
Incident Details: Illinois State Police responded to the northbound lanes of I-94 near 59th Street at approximately 11:35 p.m. A Nissan sedan reportedly became disabled in traffic when it was struck from behind by an oncoming semi-truck. The impact left the sedan severely damaged, with emergency responders forced to extract both a woman and a child from the wreckage.
The driver of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. A passenger, whose condition has not been publicly disclosed, was also hospitalized.
All northbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway were shut down for several hours as crews responded to the scene. The roadway reopened around 4:15 a.m. Saturday. As of now, authorities have not released the identity of the deceased or whether charges will be filed.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities are still working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash, including why the Nissan stalled and whether the semi-truck driver had adequate time to stop. Investigators will also assess contributing factors such as driver attentiveness, speed, road conditions, and mechanical failure.
If negligence played a role, whether due to inattention, improper vehicle maintenance, or failure to slow for a disabled vehicle, the surviving victims and the family of the deceased may have grounds for a wrongful death or personal injury claim. These claims could seek compensation for funeral expenses, medical bills, lost income, and emotional trauma.
I send my condolences to the family of the deceased and hope for a full recovery for the surviving passengers.
