Spring Valley Lake, CA (March 10, 2024) – In a tragic incident in Spring Valley Lake, Nicholas Antoni Slate, a 39-year-old man from Victorville, lost his life early Sunday morning after being hit by a suspected DUI driver. The accident occurred just after 1 a.m. along Kalin Ranch Drive, just west of Golf Course Drive, as reported by California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers and San Bernardino County coroner’s officials.
Incident Details: Slate was walking along the north side of the roadway when he was struck by a westbound 2015 Chrysler, driven by 65-year-old Cynthia Franklin of Apple Valley. The vehicle was partly in the roadway and partly on adjacent private properties at the time of the collision. Following the initial impact, Franklin’s vehicle continued westward, colliding into a concrete wall, resulting in moderate injuries to Franklin and fatal injuries to Slate, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
DUI Suspected: Franklin was treated for her injuries at a hospital and subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI causing death. The details regarding her initial court appearance and bail amount were not available at the time of reporting. Authorities are urging any witnesses or anyone with information regarding the collision to contact the CHP’s Victorville Office at (760) 241-1186.
Legal Analysis: DUI is an incredibly serious crime, especially when it results in someone’s death. The driver responsible will no doubt face some serious charges for their actions. In addition to the criminal case, Slate’s family may also have the option to pursue a wrongful death claim against the driver for their losses, including funeral costs and loss of companionship.
The death of Nicholas Antoni Slate is a somber reminder of the dangers of DUI and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and communities. My thoughts are with Slate’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. I hope that the receive justice for their loss.
