Nathaniel Antwan Jerome Carter, 18, Killed in Bakersfield Pedestrian Crash on Pacheco Road

Bakersfield, California  (March 21, 2026) — An 18-year-old man was killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a roadway in southeast Bakersfield, according to authorities.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Nathaniel Antwan Jerome Carter.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:31 p.m. in the 1100 block of Pacheco Road near Olivia Street.

Incident Details: According to the Bakersfield Police Department, officers responded to reports of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision and found Carter lying in the roadway upon arrival. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined that a vehicle traveling westbound on Pacheco Road struck Carter near the intersection. Authorities stated that the driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate that speed and impairment do not appear to have been factors in the crash.

Family members described Carter as a caring and selfless young man, noting he was in the crosswalk on his way to get milk for his nephew at the time of the collision.

Investigation: The Bakersfield Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. In pedestrian collisions occurring at or near crosswalks, investigators focus heavily on right-of-way, visibility, and driver attentiveness, particularly if the pedestrian was within a marked crosswalk, which typically provides strong legal protections under California law.

Crash reconstruction may include analysis of vehicle speed, braking evidence, and impact location, as well as any available surveillance footage or witness statements. Investigators may also evaluate lighting conditions and whether the pedestrian was visible to approaching traffic at the time of the collision. Even when impairment is not suspected, these cases often hinge on whether the driver had a reasonable opportunity to perceive and avoid the pedestrian.

At this time, no citations or charges have been announced. The investigation remains ongoing.

Legal Considerations: Pedestrian crashes in crosswalks often raise significant liability issues, as drivers are generally required to yield to pedestrians lawfully crossing the roadway. If the investigation determines that the driver failed to yield or did not exercise reasonable care, that conduct may be considered negligence.

Depending on the investigation’s findings, Carter’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, which can include compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and loss of companionship.

I offer my sincere condolences to Nathaniel Antwan Jerome Carter’s family and loved ones during this very challenging time.
