Turlock, CA (December 15, 2024) – On Sunday morning, December 15, 2024, a tragic crash south of Turlock claimed the lives of four individuals.
Accident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the collision occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 165 and Greenway Avenue. Reports indicate that a Jeep SUV traveling west on Greenway Avenue stopped at the stop sign before proceeding into the intersection, where a speeding Infiniti sedan struck it.
In the Jeep SUV, Daniel and Jennifer Lourenco (husband and wife) were pronounced dead at the scene. Their daughter, Madelynn, was transported to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Infiniti sedan, 22-year-old Uriel Guizar Negrete, was also pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the Jeep—a 19-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy—were hospitalized with major injuries.
Investigation: Authorities have not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination.
- Driver Behavior: The Infiniti was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, which could indicate negligence. Drivers are legally responsible for maintaining safe speeds and being prepared to react to other vehicles at intersections, especially where stop signs are involved.
- Intersection Safety: An investigation may consider whether signage, road visibility, or other safety measures at Highway 165 and Greenway Avenue are adequate. If deficiencies exist, this could raise concerns about municipal responsibility for road safety design.
The surviving family members of the Lourencos may have grounds to pursue wrongful death claims against Negrete’s estate or any responsible parties. Such claims can address loss of financial support, emotional suffering, and funeral expenses. The injured passengers may also consider personal injury claims to cover medical costs, pain, and suffering.
Update December 20, 2024: The California Highway Patrol has confirmed Friday, December 20, 2024, that Matthew Lourenco, the 14-year-old injured passenger, has died from his injuries.
My deepest condolences go out to all those impacted by this heartbreaking incident. I hope they find the closure and support they need.
