Lompoc, CA (February 25, 2025) – Sean Birdsell, a 53-year-old resident of Lompoc, was killed in a collision with a pickup truck at the intersection of West Ocean Avenue and South Bailey Avenue.
Accident Details
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m. when an 83-year-old woman driving a pickup truck stopped at the stop sign on South Bailey Avenue and proceeded into the intersection. The truck entered the path of Birdsell’s Honda motorcycle, traveling east on West Ocean Avenue. The pickup truck and motorcycle collided. Birdsell was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured. The CHP is investigating, and officers urge anyone with additional information to contact them.
Investigation and Legal Considerations
As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. The pickup truck driver had a stop sign, but Birdsell did not. Even after stopping at a stop sign, drivers must carefully check for vehicles before proceeding. Did the driver fail to react to Birdsell’s motorcycle due to distraction, impairment, or fatigue? If the driver had not properly assessed the intersection before pulling out, she may have failed to yield to Birdsell. Investigators will likely determine whether either vehicle was speeding and whether there was an opportunity to avoid the collision. They will examine available evidence, including traffic camera footage and witness statements.
Depending on the findings, Birdsell’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Through this claim, compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional suffering may be recoverable.
I extend my deepest sympathies to Sean Birdsell’s family and loved ones.
