Chico, CA (March 4, 2026) – Authorities have identified 34-year-old Cameron Phillips of Chico as the motorcyclist who died after a crash involving a suspected drunk driver on Esplanade.
Incident Details: According to the Chico Police Department, officers responded to a crash involving a vehicle and a motorcycle in the 3000 block of Esplanade around 6:45 p.m. on March 4, 2026.
When officers arrived, Phillips was found lying in the roadway. Several bystanders began life-saving measures before emergency responders arrived. Phillips was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators determined that Phillips was riding his motorcycle when a vehicle driven by 40-year-old Orlando Gomez-Ventura turned directly into his path, causing the initial crash. After the impact, Phillips came to rest in the roadway and was struck by a second vehicle.
Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with the police. Authorities later determined Gomez-Ventura was under the influence of alcohol, and he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Investigation: The Chico Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to review the circumstances of the crash. Investigators will examine the timing and positioning of the vehicles involved to determine how the initial collision occurred and whether the turning driver failed to yield to the oncoming motorcycle.
Authorities will also analyze physical evidence from the roadway, including skid marks and vehicle damage, as well as witness statements and available surveillance footage. Investigators will evaluate the role alcohol impairment may have played and will also review whether the second driver had sufficient time or distance to avoid striking Phillips after the first collision.
Legal Considerations: Crashes involving impaired drivers often result in both criminal charges and civil liability.
If investigators confirm that Gomez-Ventura’s intoxication and failure to yield caused the initial crash, that conduct may form the basis of a wrongful death claim for Cameron Phillips’s surviving family members. They may have the right to pursue compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and the loss of companionship and guidance.
Because a second vehicle was involved after the initial collision, investigators and attorneys may also review whether any additional liability applies depending on the circumstances of the secondary impact.
My deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Cameron Phillips during this heartbreaking time.
