Sacramento, CA (January 12, 2025) – A devastating crash on westbound Highway 50 near the Highway 99 interchange claimed the life of 42-year-old Brian Shaw and injured several other motorcyclists.
Accident Details: The collision occurred when a car struck a group of 13 motorcyclists who were traveling together as part of the Vituscan Riders motorcycle group. The accident resulted in the death of Shaw, a beloved husband, father of two, wrestling coach, and community leader. Five other motorcyclists suffered injuries, including broken ribs, fractured legs, and ankles. The group had been en route to Oroville and Magalia for a historical excursion.
Investigation: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating the collision, including the role of temporary lane changes in the area. Officials do not suspect DUI or intentional actions as factors but are urging anyone with dashcam footage to assist with the investigation.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. The California Highway Patrol’s investigation into the role of temporary lane changes and the actions of the motorcyclists will be crucial in determining liability. Investigators will also examine whether other road conditions and motorcycle malfunction contributed to the collision.
The family of Brian Shaw may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim. Under this claim, Shaw’s loved ones could seek compensation for damages such as funeral expenses, lost financial support, and emotional distress. The injured motorcyclists may also have grounds to pursue personal injury claims against any party found negligent in this crash. California law allows victims of negligence to seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and long-term rehabilitation costs.
I extend my condolences to Brian Shaw’s family and friends during this heartbreaking time. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Shaw’s wife and children during this difficult time. Please contribute if you can. I also wish the injured a fast recovery.
