Michael Dominick Long Killed in Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident

Oildale, CA (July 12, 2024) – On July 12, 2024, at approximately 9:35 p.m., Michael Dominick Long, a 34-year-old resident of Bakersfield, tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle in Oildale, California.

Accident Details:  The incident occurred on Universe Avenue, west of Chester Avenue. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that Long was in the westbound lane of Universe Avenue when an unidentified vehicle approached him at an undetermined rate of speed. The vehicle struck Long and subsequently fled the scene. Long was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP’s preliminary investigation has not yet determined the speed at which the vehicle was traveling or whether alcohol or drugs were involved. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that the first step is identifying the vehicle responsible for the accident. This identification process can involve reviewing traffic camera footage, canvassing the area for witnesses, and collecting any available evidence. Once the vehicle and driver are identified, they may face charges for various offenses, including hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.

Investigators will also examine whether any external factors contributed to the accident. This examination includes analyzing road conditions, the pedestrian’s visibility, and the vehicle’s condition. If the driver was under the influence, this could significantly impact the legal proceedings.

The family of Michael Dominick Long may pursue a wrongful death claim against responsible parties. This type of claim can seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and other damages resulting from the loss.

My sincerest condolences are with the family and friends of Michael Dominick Long during this heartbreaking time.
