Michael Bellinger, 43, Seriously Injured in Bicycle Collision on Highway 49 in Sonora

Sonora, CA (August 1, 2025) — A 43-year-old bicyclist from Sonora suffered major injuries Friday morning after being struck by a sedan on Highway 49 north of Old Sonora/Columbia Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Incident Details: The collision occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. when Michael Bellinger was riding his bicycle northbound along Highway 49. Behind him, 43-year-old Nicholas Chase was driving a 2019 Ford sedan. CHP investigators say Chase allowed his vehicle to drift onto the shoulder, striking Bellinger with the passenger side of the car. Bellinger was transported to Memorial Medical Center for treatment of major injuries. Chase was uninjured.

The crash was initially reported as a hit-and-run, but subsequent investigation determined it was not the case.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: While the CHP continues their investigation, the primary question for investigators will be why Chase’s vehicle drifted onto the shoulder, whether due to distraction, inattention, or another preventable cause. Evidence from the crash scene, vehicle inspection, and potential eyewitness accounts will be critical to determining fault.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Bellinger may have grounds to pursue a personal injury claim to recover damages for medical bills, lost wages, and other losses.

I wish Michael Bellinger a full and swift recovery from his injuries.
