Hilmar, California (September 5, 2025) — A 64-year-old man was struck and killed late Friday night in Hilmar by a suspected drunk driver who fled the scene, according to authorities.
Incident Details: The crash happened shortly before 11:30 p.m. near Highway 165 and Third Street. Witnesses reported a dark-colored Chevrolet Silverado speeding before hitting the pedestrian as he attempted to cross the highway. Emergency responders arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: About 20 minutes after the crash, officers located the suspect vehicle still traveling on Highway 165. The driver, identified as 40-year-old Angel Ortega, was arrested and booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of murder, felony DUI, and felony hit-and-run. Prosecutors will evaluate toxicology reports and witness accounts to determine the extent of Ortega’s criminal liability. From a civil perspective, the victim’s family may pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against Ortega to recover funeral costs, lost support, and emotional damages.
