CHULA VISTA, CA (July 13, 2025) – A growing memorial marks the spot where 8-year-old Mattviel Rodriguez was fatally struck by a car while riding an electric scooter Sunday afternoon, according to the Chula Vista Police Department.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 2:15 p.m. in the Tango Loop community of Chula Vista. Authorities say Mattviel, who was visiting from Ramona, was riding his scooter near his brother, who was on a bicycle, when a 2013 convertible Audi struck him.
Neighbors say the area has no sidewalks and is often crowded with children walking, riding bikes, or playing. Mattviel was about to enter third grade at the time of the crash.
The driver, a 55-year-old man who lives nearby, remained at the scene. Police have not yet released additional details about the investigation or whether charges will be filed.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Chula Vista Police Department is investigating the incident. Crashes involving children and residential traffic raise important questions about speed, attentiveness, and neighborhood safety. Drivers in residential areas are required to exercise extra caution, especially in communities without sidewalks where children frequently play.
Families impacted by fatal pedestrian or scooter crashes may have legal options to pursue claims for wrongful death and related damages, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mattviel Rodriguez during this tragic time.
