Matthew Westberg Killed in Hit-and-Run While Cycling on Jahant Road in San Joaquin County

San Joaquin County, CA (May 6, 2025) — A 55-year-old bicyclist, Matthew Westberg of Galt, was killed early Monday morning in a hit-and-run collision along Jahant Road, east of Highway 99, according to the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office and California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Incident Details: The fatal crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. on May 5, as Westberg was riding eastbound on Jahant Road. An unidentified vehicle struck him from behind, knocking him off his bicycle and into a nearby irrigation ditch, where he died from his injuries. Authorities confirmed the driver fled the scene without rendering aid or calling emergency services.

CHP has not released any information about the suspected vehicle or driver. Anyone with information is urged to contact the CHP Stockton office.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: The investigation remains active and is being investigated as a felony hit-and-run, a serious offense under California law. Authorities will examine the incident scene and work toward identifying the vehicle involved and its driver.

Depending on the investigator’s findings, Westberg’s family may also pursue a wrongful death claim, seeking compensation for funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and loss of companionship.

I extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of Matthew Westberg during this time.
