Mark Gerald Vaugh Straass, 72, Jesus Canales Lopez, 66, and Maria Del Carmen Contreras Albino, 48, Killed; Two Others Injured in Julian Head-On Collision

Julian, California  (April 4, 2026) — Three people were killed and two others were injured Saturday afternoon when two pickup trucks collided head-on on State Route 78 near Julian, according to authorities. Early reporting said two people had died, and two were airlifted, but later reporting confirmed a third victim also died from crash injuries.

Officials identified the deceased as 72-year-old Mark Gerald Vaugh Straass of San Diego, 66-year-old Jesus Canales Lopez, and 48-year-old Maria Del Carmen Contreras Albino. Straass was driving one of the pickup trucks and later died at Palomar Medical Center on April 6. Canales Lopez, who was driving the other pickup, and Contreras Albino, his passenger, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened at about 2:50 p.m. on State Route 78 near Mastros Trailer Park Road on Banner Grade, just east of Julian.

Incident Details: According to early reports, the collision involved two pickup trucks, including what a witness described as a lifted pickup truck. Cal Fire confirmed at the time that two people were killed and two others were airlifted to trauma centers for treatment. The crash forced a full closure of SR-78 in both directions for hours while emergency crews responded and investigators worked at the scene.

Later reporting added that Canales Lopez’s pickup collided head-on with Straass’ truck and that both vehicles overturned multiple times. Contreras Albino was riding in Canales Lopez’s vehicle. First responders extricated her from the wreckage and attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Straass was transported to the hospital, where he later died. Authorities have not publicly identified the two surviving injured victims.

Investigation: In a crash like this, investigators will likely focus on why the two pickup trucks collided head-on and whether one vehicle crossed the centerline on Banner Grade. In a rural two-lane highway crash involving multiple fatalities and rollovers, crash reconstruction often becomes central to understanding the exact sequence of events.

A full investigation is necessary to understand the cause and mechanism of this devastating collision. Investigators will likely examine factors such as vehicle damage, debris patterns, roadway markings, speed, visibility, and witness accounts to reconstruct the moments before impact. Given that both vehicles reportedly overturned multiple times, the force and angle of the collision are critical elements in determining how the fatalities and serious injuries occurred.

Legal Considerations: Fatal head-on collisions often raise serious civil liability questions because they frequently involve a vehicle leaving its proper lane of travel. In a case involving three deaths and serious trauma, early evidence preservation can make a major difference in uncovering the truth and protecting the rights of the families affected.

The Straass, Lopez, and Albino families may have the opportunity to pursue wrongful death claims, depending on the final results of the investigation. If successful, these claims could help cover funeral and burial costs, compensate for the loss of financial support, and address the emotional pain of losing love, companionship, care, and guidance.

The injured survivors may also pursue personal injury claims for medical expenses, future treatment, lost income, and pain and suffering.

My deepest condolences go out to the loved ones and family of Mark Straass, Jesus Canales Lopez, and Maria Del Carmen Contreras Albino, and I wish healing to those who survived the crash.
