San Diego, CA (April 8, 2025) – A 70-year-old man who was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking his dog in Carmel Valley over the weekend has been identified as Mark Maisel, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Incident Details: The crash occurred around 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, in the 5000 block of Brookburn Drive. According to investigators, Maisel had been walking with his wife and their dog when the collision occurred. His wife had safely crossed the street and was waiting on the other side when Maisel stepped into the roadway after two vehicles had passed.
At that moment, a westbound Lexus approached and struck Maisel, throwing him into the street. Emergency responders were called immediately, and the driver of the Lexus remained at the scene, attempting to administer first aid while waiting for paramedics.
Maisel was transported to Scripps Health in La Jolla, where he was later pronounced dead. His dog was also hit in the collision and was taken to a veterinarian by bystanders. Police have not confirmed the condition of the pet.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The San Diego Police Department is continuing its investigation into the circumstances of the crash. While the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities, investigators will likely evaluate factors such as vehicle speed, visibility conditions, and pedestrian right-of-way.
Maisel’s family may have the option to pursue a wrongful death claim, depending on the findings. These claims can help address funeral expenses, emotional distress, and loss of companionship resulting from the sudden loss of a loved one.
I extend my sympathies to the family of Mark Maisel during this difficult time.
