Bakersfield, CA (February 2, 2025) – Authorities have identified Mariana Lizbeth Rivera Acosta, 19, as the victim of a fatal head-on collision on Highway 58 west of Interstate 5.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 5:57 p.m. on Sunday. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Acosta was driving a 2016 Chevrolet eastbound on Highway 58 when a westbound 2023 Dodge, driven by a 22-year-old male, crossed into her lane while he was attempting to pass another vehicle. The two cars collided head-on, resulting in Acosta’s death at the scene. A female passenger in the Dodge sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital. Three minors who were also in the Dodge suffered minor injuries.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Investigators have reported that the driver of the Dodge crossed into the eastbound lane while attempting to pass another vehicle. California law requires drivers to ensure it is safe to pass and that no oncoming traffic is present. Investigators will examine the surrounding circumstances to determine if the Dodge driver made this maneuver safely.
Acosta’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit if the other driver is found to be negligent. Compensation from such a claim could address funeral expenses and emotional suffering caused by this tragic accident. The injured passengers in the Dodge may be able to file personal injury claims. Depending on the circumstances, they may be able to recover medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering damages.
I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mariana Lizbeth Rivera Acosta. I wish the injured individuals a fast recovery.
