Maria Elena Chavez de Chavez Killed, One Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash Near Salinas

Salinas, CA (May 22, 2024) – A fatal hit-and-run accident occurred early Wednesday morning on Alisal Road north of Hartnell Road, claiming the life of a woman, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Incident Overview: The crash took place around 6:17 a.m., involving a Nissan Altima and a GMC Yukon. The Nissan, driven by a 68-year-old Salinas man, was slowing to turn left into an agricultural field with a 67-year-old woman, Maria Elena Chavez de Chavez, also from Salinas, in the passenger seat. As the Nissan began its turn, a white 2001 GMC Yukon attempted to pass in the northbound lane but collided with the Nissan’s left rear as it turned. The impact forced the Nissan off the road into a ditch, while the GMC stopped across the lanes. Maria Elena Chavez de Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the Nissan sustained major head injuries and was transported to Natividad Medical Center. The driver of the GMC fled the scene before CHP officers arrived and remains unidentified. The CHP is actively searching for this individual and is investigating the circumstances of the crash, including potential impairment from alcohol or drugs.

Legal Implications: This hit-and-run incident not only represents a significant criminal offense, but also opens the possibility for serious civil consequences for the fleeing driver. The family of Maria Elena Chavez de Chavez could consider filing a wrongful death lawsuit to seek compensation for their loss, addressing both the emotional and financial burdens this tragedy has imposed. The driver could also pursue a personal injury claim for damages including their injuries, lost wages, etc. However, the driver needs to be identified as well. Anyone with information about the crash or the whereabouts of the GMC driver is urged to contact the California Highway Patrol.

My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Maria Elena Chavez de Chavez during this extremely difficult time. I hope that the suspected hit-and-run driver is identified and quickly apprehended.
