Shelbyville, TN (March 10, 2025) – A deadly head-on collision between two dump trucks claimed the lives of both drivers on Saturday afternoon in Bedford County, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP). The crash caused both trucks to overturn and catch fire, shutting down State Route 437 for several hours.
Incident Overview: The collision occurred around 1:15 p.m. near Philippi Road. Investigators say 24-year-old Marcus Johnson was driving a southbound Western Star dump truck when he crossed the center line and collided with 46-year-old Dante Jose Guel, driving a northbound Kenworth dump truck loaded with gravel.
The impact caused both vehicles to overturn and ignite. Johnson’s truck landed in a ditch, while Guel’s truck overturned on the road. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
State Route 437 was closed from Philippi Road to Railroad Avenue while crews investigated and cleared the debris.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities are reviewing whether speed, distraction, mechanical failure, or environmental factors contributed to the crash. Investigators will assess driver behavior, mechanical conditions, and roadway safety.
Depending on the findings, the families of the deceased could pursue wrongful death claims, including compensation for funeral expenses, lost income, and emotional distress. Liability may extend to the drivers’ employers, maintenance providers, or vehicle manufacturers if negligence or mechanical failure is confirmed.
My deepest condolences go out to the families of Marcus Johnson and Dante Jose Guel.
