Valley Center, CA (April 10, 2024) – A devastating incident occurred last Wednesday when 27-year-old Manuel Leon, a county contractor, was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver. The accident took place on Cool Valley Road near Cole Grade Road.
Incident Overview: Manuel Leon was directing traffic while wearing a safety vest as part of his duties for a county-contracted brush clearing crew. A Toyota Corolla collided with him and then fled the scene. Leon was rushed to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigation and Legal Implications: The California Highway Patrol reported that 77-year-old Ruperto Jesus Lopez was arrested the next day on charges including vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run. The community played a critical role in aiding the investigation through tips that led to Lopez’s arrest. Based on the negligence of the driver and their unwillingness to stop and assist, Leon’s family could choose to pursue a wrongful death claim for their loss. This could help them with damages such as funeral expenses, loss of companionship, emotional distress, and more.
My thoughts are with Manuel Leon’s family during this tragic time as they navigate this immense loss. I hope that the driver is held accountable for their actions and that the family receives the support they need. If you can, please donate to their GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses.
