Lakeport, CA (June 5, 2024) – A tragic solo-vehicle crash on Highway 29 resulted in the death of a Lakeport woman on Wednesday afternoon.
Incident Details: The accident occurred at approximately 4:15 p.m. north of 11th Street in Lakeport. Linda Jean Smith, 76, was identified as the victim of the crash involving her white 2003 Toyota Tacoma. According to the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Clear Lake Area office, Smith was traveling northbound in the No. 1 lane at 65 miles per hour when her vehicle unexpectedly veered across the highway.
The CHP reported that Smith’s Toyota crossed the center median and the southbound lanes of Highway 29. It continued through a barbed wire fence on the west side of the freeway, crossed Mountainview Road, traversed the descending embankment, and ultimately collided with a tree on the embankment before coming to a stop. First responders rushed Smith to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The CHP has stated that they do not believe alcohol or drugs were contributing factors in the accident.
Investigation and Legal Implications: The exact cause of why the vehicle veered off the road is still under investigation to determine if it was a medical issue, mechanical failure, or another unknown factor. However, if it was found that some sort of mechanical issue, the family of the victim may choose to pursue a wrongful death claim. That being said, more information will be needed before reaching any conclusions.
My condolences go out to the family and friends of Linda Jean Smith during this profoundly difficult time. I hope that they receive the answers they need following this tragic accident.
