Bakersfield, CA (April 26, 2024) – A tragic incident on Wible Road has resulted in the death of a local bicyclist, identified by the Kern County Coroner’s Office as 57-year-old Leonardo Torres.
Incident Overview: The accident occurred last Friday around 5:58 p.m. at the intersection of Wible Road and Planz Road. Leonardo Torres of Bakersfield was fatally struck by a semi-truck under circumstances that are still under investigation. However, authorities say that the semi-truck was traveling north on Wible Road while Mr. Torres was cycling west on Planz Road at the time of the collision. When police arrived at the scene, they found Mr. Torres deceased.
Investigation and Legal Implications: The truck driver, who initially left the scene, returned after being informed of the incident by a witness. This aspect of the case is particularly significant, as leaving the scene of an accident can have serious legal consequences. However, the driver’s return might influence the legal proceedings. Additionally, preliminary findings suggest that alcohol, drugs, and speed were not factors in this crash. Even if the case doesn’t result in criminal charges against the driver, the family of Torres may consider filing a wrongful death claim for their loss.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Leonardo Torres following this accident. I hope that they receive the support they need during this difficult time.
