Fort Wayne, IN (August 7, 2025) — A chain-reaction collision involving three vehicles left one woman dead and six others injured Thursday morning on southbound I-69, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.
Incident Details: The crash occurred around 7:15 a.m. near the Illinois Road exit. Police report that an SUV carrying seven people was pinned between a pickup truck and a semi truck. A female passenger in the SUV died at the scene, while the six other occupants sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital. The drivers of the pickup and semi were not hurt. Witnesses told police that traffic had slowed due to a wide load when the semi rear-ended the SUV, pushing it into the back of the pickup. Lane restrictions from nearby construction may have contributed to the congestion.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining several factors, including the semi-truck driver’s speed, following distance, reaction time, and whether proper safety protocols were followed in the construction zone. Investigators will likely review traffic camera footage, driver logs, and vehicle data recorders to establish fault.
Pending the results of the investigation, the family of the deceased woman, along with the injured passengers, may have the right to pursue wrongful death and personal injury claims. These claims could seek compensation for funeral expenses, medical bills, lost wages, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
I extend my condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life and hope for a swift recovery for those injured.
