Lalita Marie Young Struck and Killed in a Hit-and-Run Crash in South Bakersfield, CA

Bakersfield, CA (March 14, 2026) – Authorities have identified 49-year-old Lalita Marie Young of Bakersfield as the woman who was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash in south Bakersfield.

Incident Details: According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the collision occurred around 9:50 p.m. on March 14, 2026, in the 200 block of Belle Terrace. Investigators reported that Young was on the south shoulder of the roadway when she was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound. Young died at the scene from her injuries.

Witnesses described the vehicle that struck Young as a dark-colored sedan, which fled the scene after the collision.

Police later identified and arrested 42-year-old Pedro Contreras, who is facing charges including vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death.

Investigation: The Bakersfield Police Department is continuing its investigation of the fatal crash. Based on preliminary findings, authorities believe that speed and driver impairment were contributing factors in the collision.

Investigators will likely also examine the sequence of events leading up to the crash, including the vehicle’s speed, the driver’s condition, and whether the driver failed to maintain proper control or awareness. Officers may also rely on witness statements, physical evidence from the scene, and any available surveillance footage to reconstruct what occurred.

Because this was a hit-and-run incident, investigators are also focused on the driver’s actions after the crash, including the failure to stop and render aid. The results of the investigation will help determine the full extent of the driver’s responsibility and support the criminal charges filed.

Legal Considerations: Hit-and-run crashes involving speed and impairment often result in both criminal charges and civil liability. Under California law, drivers are required to stop immediately after a collision, provide assistance, and remain at the scene. Failing to do so can significantly increase legal consequences.

If investigators confirm that negligent or reckless driving caused the crash, Lalita Marie Young’s surviving family members may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. These claims may seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and the emotional loss suffered by loved ones.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Lalita Marie Young as they cope with this tragic loss. I hope they are surrounded by support during this incredibly difficult time.
