Julia Grubb Killed, One Critically Injured in Crash on I-40 in Amarillo

Amarillo, TX (March 19, 2025) – Julia Grubb, 58, of Fountain Hills, Arizona, was killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 40 at Western Street after a Toyota Tundra pulling a trailer lost control and crashed into a restaurant sign.

Incident Details: According to the Amarillo Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 3:36 p.m. when a Toyota Tundra towing a U-Haul trailer, driven by a 50-year-old man from Fountain Hills, Arizona, lost control on I-40. The Tundra rear-ended a 2017 BMW X3, causing it to crash into the center divider before stopping in the grassy median. The Tundra continued across the highway, the median, and the frontage road before slamming head-on into a Rudy’s BBQ sign.

The driver of the Tundra suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Julia Grubb, a passenger in the Tundra, was pronounced dead at the scene. The BMW driver, a 28-year-old woman from Amarillo, was not injured. Authorities believe speed was a primary factor in the crash.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Crashes involving loss of vehicle control often require an investigation into speed, mechanical failure, or driver error. Investigators will likely assess whether road conditions, excessive speed, or a trailer imbalance contributed to the accident. If negligence is found, the surviving victim or the family of Julia Grubb may have grounds for a wrongful death claim or personal injury claims to seek compensation for their losses.

My deepest condolences go out to the family of Julia Grubb, and I hope for a full recovery for the injured driver.
