Joshua Kutz Killed in Crash with Meth-Impaired Semi-Truck Driver in Crete, IL

Crete, IL (April 16, 2025) – A 40-year-old Chicago man was killed last week in a collision with a semi-truck whose driver was allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the crash, according to Illinois State Police.

Accident Details: The crash occurred near the intersection of Illinois Route 394 and Burrville Road. Authorities say William Fanning, 58, of California, was driving a semi-truck eastbound on Burrville Road and attempted to turn left onto Illinois 394. During the maneuver, the truck turned directly into the path of a sedan driven by Joshua Kutz, 40, of Chicago.

Kutz’s vehicle struck the underside of the trailer, sustaining severe roof damage. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Legal Considerations: Police allege that Fanning had methamphetamine in his system while operating the semi-truck. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated DUI causing death, a serious felony offense in Illinois. If convicted, Fanning could face substantial prison time.

In addition to the criminal case, the family of Joshua Kutz may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit, potentially holding both the driver and the trucking company liable for damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, and loss of companionship.

Ongoing Investigation: Fanning is being held pending trial. Authorities have not yet released further details about upcoming court appearances or whether any additional charges may be filed.

I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Joshua Kutz during this incredibly difficult time.
