Joshua David Hathaway Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash Near Downtown Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA (January 12, 2025) – Authorities are searching for the hit-and-run driver who struck and killed Joshua David Hathaway, 41, near downtown Los Angeles early January 12.

Accident Details: According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the crash occurred around 12:50 a.m. at the intersection of Third Street and Lucas Avenue. A white 2018-2022 Honda Accord was traveling west on Lucas Avenue. It struck Hathaway, who was walking near the intersection. The driver did not stop or render aid. The driver fled the scene, driving westbound on Third Street. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced Hathaway dead at the scene.

LAPD Seeks Public’s Help: To generate new leads, LAPD has released surveillance footage of the suspect’s vehicle. The video can be viewed on LAPD’s YouTube channel. A standing reward of up to $50,000 is offered for information leading to the driver’s identification, arrest, and conviction. Anyone with information is urged to contact law enforcement.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. A hit-and-run is a serious crime under California law, as drivers are legally required to stop, render aid, and report any collision involving injury or death. Fleeing the scene demonstrates negligence and reckless disregard for human life.

If the hit-and-run driver is identified, Hathaway’s family may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking damages for funeral costs, emotional suffering, and loss of financial support. If the driver is not found, Hathaway’s family may still be able to pursue compensation through an uninsured motorist (UM) claim if Hathaway had auto insurance with UM coverage.

I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Joshua David Hathaway during this heartbreaking time.
