Jose Ramos, 35, and Four Others Killed in Head-On Kings County Highway 41 Crash

Kings County, California  (April 12, 2026) — Five people were killed Sunday morning in a head-on crash on Highway 41 in Kings County, according to authorities.

Officials identified one of the deceased as 35-year-old Jose Ramos of Oakdale, who was driving a Toyota Prius. Authorities said the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado and three passengers in that vehicle were also killed. Their identities have not yet been released.

The crash happened at about 10:29 a.m. on Highway 41 just south of York Avenue.

Incident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash began when a Chevrolet Silverado traveling southbound crossed into the northbound lane while attempting to pass slower traffic. Authorities said the Silverado then collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota Prius driven by Jose Ramos.

The impact caused the Silverado to overturn and catch fire on the shoulder. CHP said the driver and three passengers in the Silverado were killed, along with Ramos, the sole occupant of the Prius. Public reporting has not yet identified the people who were inside the Silverado.

Officials said it is still unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.

Investigation: In a crash like this, investigators will likely focus on the Silverado’s attempted passing maneuver, the amount of time and distance available before impact, and whether the driver crossed into the oncoming lane when it was unsafe to do so. In head-on collisions on rural highways, those few seconds often tell the whole story.

Investigators may also review speed, sightlines, roadway markings, witness statements, and vehicle damage to reconstruct exactly how the crash unfolded. Because the Silverado reportedly overturned and caught fire after the impact, crash reconstruction will likely be especially important in determining the collision’s force and angle. This is the kind of crash that calls for a full accounting of what happened and why.

Legal Considerations: Fatal head-on crashes often present serious civil liability issues because they frequently involve a vehicle crossing into oncoming traffic. In a crash involving five deaths, the civil side can be just as important for families seeking answers and accountability after a devastating loss.

Pending the investigation’s findings, the families of all victims in the crash, Jose Ramos, and the occupants of the Silverado, may have grounds to file wrongful death claims. For Jose’s family, such a claim could provide compensation for the loss of his love, care, and financial support, as well as cover his medical and burial expenses.

My heartfelt sympathies are with the Ramos family and loved ones, as well as with the families of the four other individuals who lost their lives in this crash.
