Oxnard, CA (April 21, 2024) – A tragic incident late Sunday night resulted in the death of a 35-year-old bicyclist from North Hollywood following a collision with an SUV in Oxnard.
Incident Overview: The Oxnard Police Department reports that officers were called to the scene of the accident around 9:40 p.m. at the intersection of the northbound 101 Freeway offramp and Oxnard Boulevard. Joey Paquet, the bicyclist, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, Paquet was riding southbound in the northbound lanes of Oxnard Boulevard when he was struck by a 2012 Ford Edge making a right turn from the 101 Freeway offramp.
The driver of the Ford Edge remained at the scene and cooperated fully with law enforcement officials. Investigators have indicated that they do not believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the crash.
Investigation and Legal Implications: While preliminary findings suggest that no impairing substances or excessive speed were involved, the investigation will still need to determine the full circumstances of the collision. Issues such as right of way, the visibility of the bicyclist, and road conditions at the time of the accident will be crucial in understanding liabilities and responsibilities. The family of Joey Paquet might consider seeking legal counsel to explore their options, including potential compensation for wrongful death, which could cover funeral costs, loss of income, and emotional distress.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Joey Paquet in the wake of this heartbreaking accident. I hope that they are able to receive the support they need during this difficult time.
