LAFD Recruit Jacob Fuerte Killed in Hit-and-Run on 101 Freeway

Studio City, CA (April 15, 2024) – A tragic incident on the 101 Freeway claimed the life of Jacob Fuerte, a 22-year-old Los Angeles Fire Department recruit. The accident occurred early Monday near Vineland Avenue when Fuerte, en route to the LAFD training academy, stopped to assist at a crash site.

Incident Overview: According to authorities, Fuerte was involved in an initial two-car accident where another person was ejected from their vehicle. Fuerte then exited his vehicle, likely in an attempt to assess the situation and render aid. Shortly after exiting his vehicle, he was struck in a secondary collision. The vehicle, described as a dark-colored SUV or van, fled the scene after hitting him.

Investigation and Legal Implications: The California Highway Patrol is seeking the hit-and-run driver. Anyone with information is urged to contact the CHP’s West Valley office. This incident highlights the dangers emergency responders face and the legal consequences of hit-and-run offenses. The facts leading up to the second collision also add a layer of complexity to the incident. However, if the person responsible is found, Fuerte’s family may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim against the driver for their loss.

My heart goes out to the family and friend of Jacob Fuerte as well as the LAFD community. I hope that the driver responsible is apprehended and brought to justice.
