Isaiah Jeffers, 17, Severely Injured in Bakersfield Electric Bike Hit-and-Run on Planz Road

Bakersfield, California (April 15, 2026) — A teenager was severely injured in a hit-and-run crash while riding an electric bike near the intersection of Planz Road and South Chester Avenue in Bakersfield, according to KERO.

Family members identified the injured teen as Isaiah Jeffers, who was 16 at the time of the crash and turned 17 while recovering in the hospital.

The crash happened just after 10:00 p.m. on Planz Road.

Incident Details: According to KERO, security video shows Isaiah riding his electric bike west on Planz Road when a vehicle struck him. His family said the driver dragged Isaiah and his bike for several yards before fleeing the scene.

KERO reported that the footage showed the driver speeding before hitting Isaiah and a friend who was riding nearby, then leaving them in the roadway. Isaiah’s father, Cornelius Jeffers, said Isaiah’s friend, identified as Zelon, helped pull him out of the street and onto the curb. His father said that without that help, Isaiah may have remained in the roadway and faced the risk of being struck again.

Isaiah suffered severe road rash, a fractured knee, serious facial injuries requiring skin grafts and surgery, and bruised lungs. His family also said his recovery may be more difficult because he lives with sickle cell disease. According to his father, Isaiah currently cannot walk or see.

Family members said they are searching for answers and pleading for the driver to come forward. Bakersfield Police confirmed that the case remains under investigation and asked anyone with information to contact the department’s traffic division at 661-326-3896.

Investigation: Hit-and-run investigations prioritize identifying the driver, often using security footage from various sources to determine vehicle details. The mechanics of this crash are disturbing: Isaiah’s family reports the driver dragged him and his electric bike for yards before fleeing. This suggests a severe impact and potential driver awareness. Legally, a driver in an e-bike collision must stop, render aid, and remain at the scene; fleeing can exacerbate injuries.

Investigators may examine Planz Road near South Chester Avenue. Since the crash occurred after 10:00 p.m., lighting, visibility, traffic, lane position, and e-bike riders’ visibility to drivers matter. These factors may help determine if speeding, distraction, or reckless driving contributed, but do not justify leaving the scene.

Legal Considerations: This situation raises questions about accountability. Isaiah’s injuries, including a fractured knee, facial wounds requiring surgery and grafts, bruised lungs, vision issues, and sickle cell disease, may result in lasting medical, financial, and emotional consequences. As a teenager, professionals might assess how injuries affect his education, mobility, activities, and development. Hit-and-run incidents involving electric bikes can complicate matters. Gathering evidence like videos, witness statements, photos, medical records, and police reports is crucial for exploring options.

Depending on the investigation’s outcome and the identification of the driver, Isaiah and his family could pursue a personal injury claim. Such a civil claim could cover emergency care, hospitalization, surgery, future treatments, rehabilitation, pain and suffering, and how Isaiah’s injuries affect his daily life. If the driver isn’t found, the family may be able to explore insurance options, such as uninsured motorist coverage or other recovery options.

I hope Isaiah Jeffers gets the care he needs and his family receives the support they require as he continues to recover.
