Los Angeles, CA (April 8, 2025) – A tragic wrong-way crash in the Vermont Square neighborhood of South Los Angeles claimed the life of an infant and left both parents in critical condition after their vehicle was struck by a man driving a stolen car at high speed, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The driver of the stolen vehicle was also killed in the collision.
Incident Overview: The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, April 7, as a family of three was traveling southbound on Western Avenue near 46th Street. Surveillance footage from a nearby market captured the moment when a white vehicle traveling northbound at high speed crossed over the center divider and slammed head-on into the driver’s side of the family’s car.
The force of the crash caused the suspect’s vehicle to spin out, overturn, and scatter debris across the street. LAPD officials confirmed that a child under one year old was killed at the scene, while the parents, both in their 30s, were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
The suspect described only as a man in his 40s, was ejected from the stolen vehicle and also pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities believe he had been driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph and may have attempted to slow down upon seeing police nearby, though officers clarified there was no active pursuit underway.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: LAPD’s investigation remains ongoing, but preliminary findings suggest the suspect’s reckless driving and theft of the vehicle directly led to the deadly crash. Authorities will conduct a thorough evaluation, including interviewing witnesses, collecting and analyzing evidence, consulting with experts, and reviewing relevant documentation.
Depending on investigation findings, the family may be able to pursue wrongful death and personal injury claims against other parties tied to the stolen vehicle, depending on ownership and insurance coverage. These claims could help the family cover funeral expenses, medical costs, lost income, and long-term care.
I send my condolences to the infant’s family and wish the parents a full recovery.
